Why Your Hoist Brake Fails: 7 Common Causes and Prevention Tips

A reliable brake is essential for the safe operation of any electric hoist. When the brake fails to hold the load properly, it can cause load drifting, inaccurate positioning, unexpected downtime, and even serious safety risks.

Fortunately, most brake failures can be prevented with proper maintenance and correct operation.

1. Worn Brake Linings

Brake friction materials wear over time. As they become thinner, the brake loses holding force and may allow the load to drift.

Solution: Inspect the brake regularly and replace worn components before they reach their service limit.

2. Oil or Grease Contamination

Oil leaking from the gearbox or bearings can reduce friction between the brake surfaces, causing slipping under load.

Solution: Repair the leak immediately and clean or replace contaminated brake parts.

3. Incorrect Brake Adjustment

An improperly adjusted brake air gap may prevent the brake from engaging or releasing correctly.

4. Overloading

Lifting loads beyond the hoist's rated capacity increases wear on both the motor and the braking system.

Solution: Always operate within the rated load and use overload protection whenever possible.

5. Excessive Heat

Frequent lifting cycles or continuous heavy-duty operation can overheat the brake, reducing its performance and shortening its lifespan.

Solution: Choose a hoist with the appropriate duty rating and allow sufficient cooling during intensive operation.

6. Electrical Issues

Low voltage, damaged wiring, or faulty brake coils can prevent an electromagnetic brake from operating correctly.

Solution: Inspect the power supply and electrical components regularly, replacing damaged parts when necessary.

7. Poor Preventive Maintenance

Many brake problems result from neglected inspections. Dust, vibration, and normal wear gradually reduce braking performance over time.

A simple maintenance routine—including checking brake wear, cleaning components, and testing holding capacity—can significantly improve reliability and reduce unexpected downtime.
